Guidance Counselor

What Does a Guidance Counselor Do?

The school counselor works with students, teachers, administrators and families to help remove any barriers students may have to being successful in school. The program consists of a variety of services and activities:
  • Individual Counseling
  • Small Group Counseling
  • Classroom Guidance
  • Parent Consultation
  • Teacher Consultation
  • Referral to Community Agencies

Classroom Guidance is provided once every three weeks to all classes grades K-5. SPARK uses Kelso’s Choice to help students learn about problem solving and getting along with others.  Lessons will also be presented on academic skills, such as time management and organization, as well as diversity, feelings, bullying, friendships, and other topics requested by teachers.

Each month, classes focus on a character trait and homeroom teachers teach a lesson. Students vote on which of their classmates shows that trait best, and winners are rewarded by the School Counselor. The character traits by month are:

  • August: Responsibility
  • September: Respect
  • October: Tolerance
  • November: Honesty/Truthfulness
  • December: Generosity/Compassion
  • January: Kindness
  • February: Perseverance/Resourcefulness
  • March: Fairness
  • April: Cooperation
  • May: Courage/Initiative
